A New Era
| Norfolk Ski Club heralded a new era for skiers in Norfolk and North Suffolk when, on 7 October, the club's new development was officially opened. | |
|
The Earl of Wessex was due to perform the opening ceremony but was unable to attend at the last minute due to illness. Just after 10am Club Chairman, Barry Spouge, received a telephone call from the Earls private secretary. "I was just about to leave home and the telephone rang, I thought I would just leave it and go" said Barry. "But I decided to answer it, I must admit at first I thought it was someone trying to wind me up, but it very soon became clear it was for real." Nevertheless, it was decided that the days planned events should go ahead as normal. |
|
| A telephone call from the Lord Lieutenants office followed and plans remade for the days opening. So the event went ahead, though it was a huge disappointment that the Earl was unable to attend. | |

Thanks to Lord Lieutenant and Graham Bell Our thanks go to Richards Jewson JP, Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, and special guest Graham Bell, former World Cup and Olympic skier, who stepped into the breach and made the occasion a special one for the Club. Many of the Club's individual sections had worked hard on displays and demonstrations for the day and schoolchildren from Trowse Primary School also came along. In fact, a small band of these became the demonstration for a 'Taster'. Since the opening, letters from Mr Jewson and The Earl of Wessex's private secretary both state that they are working together to re arrange the visit at some future date. |
